Heir to the Cowl | Side Missions (Most Wanted) | Batman Arkham Knight

Batman: AK Guide

In this section of our Batman: Arkham Knight game guide, we will discuss the Heir to the Cowl side mission. This quest involves undertaking Azrael\’s trials, where you will engage in difficult battles. At the end of the trials, you must visit the clock tower, solve puzzles, and make a decision.

This mission becomes available early in the game. After completing the main mission, Investigate the Crash Site, which involves checking the crash site of the vehicle Oracle was in, Batman should ask Alfred for an update on wanted criminals. You will learn about a suspicious character standing near a burning bat sign on the roof of a building in the Grand Avenue district on Miagani Island.

Azrael\’s First Trial

Upon reaching the marked location in the Grand Avenue district, you will encounter Azrael, who wishes to become Batman\’s successor. Batman will first test Azrael\’s combat skills, which involve completing four trials.

After the conversation concludes, the first trial will begin. You will control Azrael, who has almost the same abilities and gadgets as Batman. However, you cannot receive any damage during the battle. Avoid unnecessary risks and perform perfect counters. Once you win the battle, listen to Batman\’s conversation about the upcoming trials.

Azrael\’s Second Trial

You must find each trial location on your own by locating burning bat marks on rooftops. A new mark can be found in the central part of Founders\’ Island, not far north from Adams port.

The second battle includes not only common bandits but also elite opponents. Be cautious, especially with the large enemy, whom you must stun before performing a beatdown. Additionally, watch out for when enemies attempt to throw large objects at Azrael. When this happens, jump to the sides or throw the objects back (using the counter button).

Azrael\’s Third Trial

Another burning bat sign can be found on the roof in the Chinatown district on Bleake Island. Talk to Azrael and participate in another battle.

During the new battles, eliminate the enemy medic as fast as possible because they can electrify other bandits. If you don\’t stop them fast enough, use the claw to neutralize electrified enemies (do not try to attack them in regular ways, or you will receive damage from electricity and fail the trial).

Azrael\’s Fourth Trial

The last trial takes place on a platform on the huge statue of Lady of Gotham, which is on a separate island southwest of Bleake Island. The location is shown above.

In this mission, you will only encounter martial arts experts as enemies, who are very challenging. It is important to stay in a defensive position and wait for the enemy to attack first. Once they do, perform a counter and only then hit them with your own punches. Also, make sure to hold the counter button/key when facing elite enemies who use melee weapons (indicated by yellow icons above their head instead of blue ones).

Visiting the Clock Tower

Listen to conversations with Azrael and Alfred, then go to the clock tower as Batman and interact with the batcomputer to analyze Azrael\’s brain neurologic activity.

Your task is to rewind the video material and find specific markers that appear at certain moments. The first marker appears around the fifth second, and you must select the corresponding rectangle shown in the picture above.

The second marker appears around the 16th second and is shown in the picture.

The third marker appears around the 28th second, and you must choose the corresponding rectangle shown in the picture above.

The last marker can be found around the 41st second. Select the rectangle shown in the picture.

After listening to another conversation, you will control Azrael again and have to decide how to act. You have three main options: leave the clock tower using the elevator, take the sword and break it after Azrael gets behind Batman\’s back, or take the sword and try to murder Batman with it (which will fail, and you will have to drive Azrael to GCPD lockup).

No matter what choice you make, the mission will end.
