The Heart of Darkness in Darkest Dungeon

A Guide to the Final Battle

At the start of the Heart of Darkness level, you will converse with Ancestor before battling him. This linear level has only one path, which leads right. After reaching the end of the corridor, prepare for the final battle of the game in the next chamber. This battle is divided into several stages.

The ideal party for this battle includes:

Vestal – her healing ability will come in handy during the fight with the boss, and she should be the first to be sacrificed.

Jester – his songs will buff the entire party, heal stress, and increase combat abilities. He should be the second to be sacrificed.

Highwayman – this class deals high damage and is needed during the fight with Ancestor when he hides behind covers.

Helion – similarly to the Highwayman, her high damage is valuable during all phases of the battle.

Bring along bandages, holy water flasks, healing herbs, and antidotes to aid you in the fight. Torches are useless in this battle.

The Boss – Ancestor

Destroying the \”imperfect\” Ancestor copies decreases his health level.

In this fight, you cannot directly damage Ancestor. Instead, when it is his turn, he will summon copies of himself. There are two types of these – Perfect Reflection and Imperfect Reflection. Killing the latter takes away one point of his health. You need to repeat this tactic five times, but the perfect copies appear more often. To decrease the damage you receive from the copies, use stunning abilities. As soon as Ancestor\’s health drops to 0, another phase starts.

Boss – Ancestor, round 2

Do not worry about the obstacles as they cannot be damaged.

At this stage, the enemy gains a normal health bar and can take damage. The battle is similar to the one against the Prophet, with additional strange beings appearing on the battlefield, known as Absolute Nothingness, that neither attack nor take damage. It is wise to have several characters that can deal damage to back rows.

Every few turns, the enemy will attack the party with one of his abilities and teleport to a random row after the attack, even to the front row, making it easier for you to eliminate him. This phase is not too difficult, but be cautious of the enemy\’s strong bleeding effect. You can use appropriate trinkets or Holy Water to remedy this. If a character starts to bleed, use bandages as soon as possible as each stacked bleeding damages you for 5 health points per turn.

Once Ancestor\’s health points reach 0, he will change his form again.

Boss – Gestating Heart

The enemy has an attack that can poison the entire party, but it has a low chance of success.

Now is the time to heal and replenish your health for the next phase. The enemy only has one attack, which is a poisoning attack that has a low chance of success. Your attacks, on the other hand, will restore health points, with a minimum of 12 points. Be careful, as each attack also has a chance of poisoning your character. If your characters become poisoned, use antivenom to remove the effect quickly. After defeating this opponent, you will progress to the final phase.

Boss – Heart of Darkness

This type of healing can be very helpful.

The final phase is a race against time. The enemy\’s attacks deal high damage and have a high chance of causing bleeding or blight, as well as critical hits. Make sure to prepare properly, heal all wounds during the previous fight, and use Holy Water during the first move of each character to increase resistance.

The enemy\’s most dangerous and unique ability is Come Unto Your Maker. The enemy will automatically use this ability after his health drops below a certain level (below 170 for the first time and around 80 points for the second time). This ability results in the immediate death of one of your characters, but you get to choose which character it will be.

You must say goodbye to one of your characters.

It is best to sacrifice supporting classes, those with high stress levels, little health, or those that do not deal significant damage, such as the Occultist, Vestal, Jester or Man-at-Arms. Characters that deal high damage, such as the Hellion or Highwayman, are worth keeping.

To win the battle, disregard any harm caused by the boss (except for bleeding and poisoning) and inflict maximum damage. The boss\’s assaults are not overly potent and only two of your characters can be taken by Come Unto Your Maker. Once the boss is defeated, a lengthy cutscene will play, concluding the game and returning you to the main menu. As a reward for your victory, you will unlock Newgame+ mode, which is more challenging and exacting, penalizing you for every misstep.
